Floods Effect on Bangladesh
On July 1998 Bangladesh was flooded and over 1040 lives were lost. Over 23.5 million homes were evacuated and around 2/3 of the country was flooded. 11,000 km of roads were damaged and some of the areas were underwater for over 2 months. The flood caused major health issues such as contaminated water.
Clean and fresh water was not available for quarter of a million people because of polluted wells and lack of supplies. Health problems were worse because of thousands of people living in the crowded flood shelters. Water borne diseases are very common during these times.
Bangladesh's economy also took a massive damage as over 400 clothing factories were closed. Production was reduced to 20% in the bangladesh's export industry.
