Floods Effect on Netherlands
On January 1995 a flood struck the Rhine river in Netherlands. Most of the land consists of dykes which means the water table is buried underneath. Because of this the water had no where to go and it flooded the entire area within hours. During the incident 4 people were killed and over 250, 000 were evacuated form their homes. Looters were also entering the evacuated homes and stealing whatever they could. Many homes were flooded and roads were blocked. Many of the protective dykes were made of sand and clay, these were saturated because of the high river levels and it made them even more likely to collapse. More than 1 million cattle were evacuated which led them to be infected. Waterways were closed and ships could not enter Netherlands for 2 weeks. The flood damage costed the government millions.
